Avoid Link Farms & Get Better Rankings:

Basically a link farms is a hodgepodge of non-related sites all linking together with the sole purpose of trying to obtain as many possible links as possible.

Never trade links with a link farm. It will back fire on you!

One of the interesting things that makes Google unique, is that in determining your page ranking it looks at how many other web sites link to you and how many web sites you link back to.

The theory goes (so they say) that the more pages that link to you, the more important you must be, therefore the more deserving your site is of a higher rank.

It didn't take long before software programmers ran with this concept and developed what is called link farms.

However, the link farm is a completely worthless method of driving Web traffic to your site as this method of link exchange actually dilutes the relevance of your page for your chosen keywords.

For example if your web site is about cooking, why would you to trade links with web sites that have to do with golf, race cars, Teletubbies, insurance agencies, backscratchers, air filters, etc.

I think you get the idea here. In order for a link exchange to drive traffic to your site and to help you in Google, the web site you trade links with must be related in some way to your site.

Think of it as one big giant theme. So in the example of your cooking web site, you would want to trade links with other sites that were about; pots and pans, recipes, other cloaking sites, foreign cuisine, kitchenware, house wares, etc.

By doing this you help create sort of a Min-Web with a common theme. Google loves this and will and will reward you with better rankings.

On the other hand should you decide to take the easy route and link to just anyone, Google will penalize your site and your ratings and rankings will suffer.

Creating a new link campaign can mean a LOT of work as it is VERY time consuming. We've found great success automating this process and we use and recommend this service for our linking campaigns.

Best of luck, and see you at the top!
